Course Description:
This six part series is for any professional working with elderly persons in a healthcare setting. We will contrast normal age-related memory loss with medical conditions that cause memory problems. Reversible conditions and medications that can cause memory loss and confusion will also be presented. We’ll take an in depth look at the risk factors, warning signs and progression of Alzheimer’s disease and discuss how to recognize and diagnose Alzheimer’s disease from non-Alzheimer’s dementias. The role of neuropsychological testing and how you can become certified to perform this value-added service will be addressed. Current treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease and their mechanisms of action will be described. You will learn effective strategies for preventing and managing challenging behaviors and communicating with individuals with dementia. The effect of hospitalization, surgery and illness on the dementia patient differs from that of the cognitively competent and approaches for successful triage, in-patient care and discharge planning will be described. Insight for interacting with and involving the family caregiver in the care plan will be shared. You will learn techniques for managing diet and nutrition, healthy sleep patterns and wandering that can be shared with the family caregiver. The series will conclude with a presentation discussing the legal issues surrounding the dementia patient such as advanced directives, determining competency, guardianship and healthcare surrogates.
