Topics:

A. Type 1.5 diabetes: also known as “Slow Onset Type 1 Diabetes or Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adulthood –(LADA)”

I. Definition
II. Clinical Feature

- Adult age at diagnosis (over 25 yrs)
- Absence of obesity
- Absence of diabetic ketoacidosis at diagnosis
- Absence of metabolic syndrome
- Uncontrolled hyperglycemia despite use of oral meds
- Family history of type I diabetes or autoimmune diseases
- Initially controlled with meal planning with or without oral diabetes medications
- Insulin dependency gradually occurs, frequently within months
- Positive pancreatic auto-antibodies
- Low c-peptide levels
- Unlikely to have family history of type II diabetes

B. Screening for type 1.5 diabetes

I. Screen persons for clinical features described in Part A
II. Immune markers

• GAD antibodies
• C-peptide
• HLA typing
• Other antibodies (islet cell, thyroid)

III. Management of Type 1.5 diabetes

• Achieve good metabolic control
• Oral meds versus insulin
• Prevent chronic complications
• Case Studies

Accreditation Information

Nurses – Academy Medical Systems is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 9 contact hours will be rewarded to nursing professionals at the completion of this workshop.

Iowa Nurses - The Iowa Board of Nurses will recognize the recorded webinars as a home study program. They recognize our ANCC approved provider status as well as our CA and Fl Board of Nursing provider approval for home study products for nurses in Iowa.

All other states recognize our approved provider status listed in the above text for continuing education credit for nurses.

Dietitians – Academy Medical Systems is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive 9 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this material.

CDEs – Academy Medical Systems' approved Provider Status with the ANCC (nurses) and the CDR (dietitians) is recognized by the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (NCBDE).

Exercise Physiologists – ACSM recognizes AMS’s approved provider status with the ANCC and will honor continuing education hour for Certified Exercise Physiologist recertification purposes.

Physical Therapists – For Physical Therapists in states that require pre-approval of continuing education programs please call us at 866-414-3500, ask for the Accreditation Dept., for the current status of this program in your state. In states that do not require pre-approval, Physical Therapists will receive 9 continuing education hours.

Occupational Therapists – Occupational Therapist will receive 9, type II, continuing education hours for completion this program and a test score of 70% or better. AMS is an approved provider for the AOTA , provider # 5470. Please call for status update. Intermediate educational level.

Certified Athletic Trainers – Academy Medical Systems is recognized by the Board of Certification (BOC) to offer continuing education for certified athletic trainers. 9 hours will be awarded at the completion of this program.
