Course Description:
An informative, empowering
one-day seminar for clinicians interested in helping
patients heal a wound. The science behind the care will
be highlighted, as well as treatment modalities for
use in your practice.

Purpose and Concept:
This dynamic one-day seminar is essential
to anyone who is involved in wound management in varied
settings and wishes to get positive results. The content
covers basic information and beyond to interest the
novice-to-skilled wound care clinician. Attendees will
interact with the instructor and take an advanced look
at the wound care population and the latest
interventions to develop a comprehensive and effective
wound management team.

care of patients who have or are at risk for chronic

- Explain how to perform an efficient and thorough wound evaluation.

- Identify complications in the patient with diabetes.
- Explain documentation skills that maximize reimbursement.
- Discuss the foundations of a successful wound center.
Workshop Curriculum:
1. Understanding the wound environment
- Review basic anatomy and physiology
for wound healing.
- Discuss risk factors impeding normal
wound healing.
2. Understanding common wound types,
their presentations and care
- Be able to correctly recognize and
distinguish between diabetic ulcers,
venous and arterial insufficiency,
pressure ulcers and other common wound
diagnoses.
3. Assessment techniques for the wounded
person
- Learn proper testing, technique and
medical terminology to assess and
document.
- Learn appropriate tests and measures
to rule out other diagnoses.
4. Identifying optimal treatments and
realistic goals
- Be able to develop appropriate plan
of care for each diagnoses and
realistic, measurable goals for wound
healing and disability.
5. Evaluation of current wound care
treatments and technologies
- Discuss modalities, treatments and
dressings in wound care.
6. The Team approach to wound management
- Discuss nutritional concerns.
- Review offloading options.
- Identify other important disease
process management.
7. Documentation skills to maximize
reimbursement
- Learn how to document patient
problems and set goals to meet insurance
requirements.
8. CPT codes and insurance guidelines to
maximize reimbursement
- Review current CPT codes used in
wound care settings.
- Discuss medical review policies to
understand insurance requirements for
reimbursement.
Presenters:
Spend an exciting day with
Hollie Smith, BS, PT, CWS a
national health professions educator,
consultant and lecturer. Ms. Smith has
over 11 years experience in wound care.
She is currently Program Director of the
Wound Management Center that she opened
in 2000 and has experience in all
settings including acute, inpatient and
outpatient, home health and skilled
nursing. She also does consultation work
in all settings.
Ms. Smith has been a guest lecturer
for various universities on wound care
as well as providing continuing
education programs for West Tennessee
Healthcare. She graduated from the
University of Tennessee, Memphis with a
Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy.
She is a Certified Wound Specialist and
is an active member of the American
Academy of Wound Management, American
Physical Therapy Association and
Tennessee Physical Therapy Association.
