Educating the Pulmonary Patient

SKILLS UPGRADE 2004
An Interactive One Day Workshop for clinicians involved in the planning & implementation of disease management strategies for persons with lung disease. There will be a strong focus on content that will enable clinicians to provide quality education at all levels of the continuum of care, from the bedside to the clinic and rehabilitation settings, to the home.

Purpose and Concept:

Pulmonary education programs are emerging as a cost-effective service for management of patients with chronic pulmonary diseases. Assisting patients in becoming more knowledgeable about their disease and more actively involved in their own health care, benefits not only the patients and their families, but also the institutions, physicians and clinicians providing care for pulmonary patients. This vital one-day workshop provides information and details essential for optimal utilization of pulmonary education services. It delivers the tools for anyone providing education in their practice. Presentations will be based on the most current scientific studies available.

Behavioral Objectives:
At the conclusion of this workshop the successful participant will:

  • Design & implement a successful education program for pulmonary patients.
  • Identify successful strategies to enhance compliance and motivate patients to be active in the management of their disease.
  • Understand the components of a safe exercise program for the person with lung disease.
  • Understand the impact of lung disease on psychosocial well-being, and the
  • importance of establishing a support network.
  • Recognize the correlation between sound patient education and a reduction in over utilization of facility services.
  • Improve documentation skills to maximize reimbursement.

PART 1. UNDERSTANDING LUNG DISEASE

  • Obstructive lung disease
  • Restrictive lung disease
PART 2. EFFECTIVENESS OF PATIENT EDUCATION ALONE VS A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF EDUCATION, EXERCISE AND PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT
  • Hospitalizations/Medical resource use
  • Occupational disability
  • Quality of life/symptoms

PART 3. ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF THE EDUCATION PROGRAM

  • Breathing retraining; Airway clearance; Medication management
  • Energy conservation; Sexuality; Nutrition; Exercise; Stress Mgt/Support

PART 4. MANAGING THE DISEASE

  • Life management skills
  • Enhancing compliance
  • Putting it all together: Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Documentation/reimbursement; Measuring the outcomes of your work

Presenters:

Spend an exciting interactive day with Jane Knipper, RN, MA, FAACVPR, an experienced clinician, educator and public speaker. She has over 25 years of experience in the nursing profession. Her background includes: general medical & respiratory critical care nursing, staff education, and pulmonary rehabilitation, as well as college and graduate college level teaching on respiratory related topics. Janie is currently the coordinator of a pulmonary rehabilitation program in a large Midwestern university affiliated hospital.

Ms. Knipper is active in the American Assoc. of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and recently served as the Pulmonary Nurse on the association's board of directors. She is also active in the state affiliate society, the Iowa Association of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, currently serving on the board of directors as Past-President, Chair of the Standardization Committee, and Co-Chair of the Reimbursement Committee. Ms. Knipper's enthusiasm for improving the quality of life for those with pulmonary disease and her easy-going presentation style will make for a dramatic day of learning.
