Course Description:
This webinar series will provide the participant with the necessary information to establish an evidence-based pulmonary rehabilitation program for a diverse population. The series begins with a review of respiratory anatomy and physiology, covers a variety of respiratory disorders and treatment plans, and concludes with the challenge of case study analysis.

#2 - Exercise Testing & Rx for the Patient with Respiratory Disease

I. Limitations of exercise intolerance in people with respiratory disease

II. Rationale for exercise testing

III. Types of exercise tests appropriate for people with respiratory disease, and information gleaned from each type of test

IV. Choosing the most appropriate exercise test

V. Definition of overload and specificity as they relate to exercise training

VI. Prescribing frequency, intensity and duration of exercise for people with chronic respiratory disease

VII. Examples of exercise RXs derived from data obtained from an exercise test.

#4 - Obesity-Related Respiratory Disorders & Pulmonary Hypertension

II. Treatment options for patients with pulmonary hypertension and/or obesity-related respiratory disorders

#5 - Thoracic Cage Abnormalities and Surgeries


Topics:

I. Thoracic cage abnormalities and their impact on lung function

II. Surgical procedures, including wedge resection, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, lung transplant, and placement of bronchial stents and valves

III. Education and exercise prescription appropriate for this population.

Behavioral/Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe abnormalities of the thoracic cage that impact lung function.
  2. Describe surgical procedures of the thorax.
  3. Identify the educational components of a pulmonary rehabilitation program individualized to the patient with thoracic cage abnormalities and surgery.
  4. Describe exercise prescription considerations for this patient population.

#6 - Meeting the Oxygen Needs of Your Patients


Topics:

I. Use of supplemental oxygen during exercise.

II. Policy components that allow flexibility in administering supplemental oxygen and titrating flow as needed.

III. Oxygen delivery and the indications and precautions of a variety of devices.

IV. Case examples of pulmonary rehab participants with pathologies presented in the Webinar series and the challenges they create.

Behavioral/Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify indicators of the need for supplemental oxygen.
  2. Describe program policy that allows flexibility in administration of supplemental oxygen during exercise.
  3. Explain how to use various delivery devices for the administration of oxygen, including high flow oxygen.
  4. Describe the analysis of the case examples of pulmonary rehabilitation program participants presented in this webinar series.

Accreditation Information

Nurses – Academy Medical Systems is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 9.0 contact hours will be rewarded to nursing professionals at the completion of this workshop.

Certified Athletic Trainers – Academy Medical Systems is recognized by the Board of Certification (BOC) to offer continuing education for certified athletic trainers. 9 hours will be awarded at the completion of this program.

Respiratory Therapists - This course meets the requirements for continuing education for Respiratory Care Professionals in AL, CA, CT, DE, FL, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, LA, ME, MA, MN, MS, MT, NE, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, RI, SC, TN, TX, WA, WV, WY.
