Considerations for Diverse Populations

Course Description:
This series will provide the participant with information regarding exercise testing and prescription for the pulmonary patient, as well as application of this information to the diverse populations of patients in a pulmonary rehabilitation program. The program will provide background information on several pulmonary disease classifications, and the development of a pulmonary rehab treatment plan for each classification. The course will culminate on part six with case examples representing the diverse populations presented throughout the series.

#1 - Exercise Testing and Prescription for the Patient with Respiratory Disease

  1. Exercise intolerance in respiratory disease.

  4. Case examples of exercise prescription for individuals with chronic obstructive lung disease.

Behavioral/Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the pathology of obstructive lung diseases commonly seen in a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
  2. Identify the educational components of a pulmonary rehabilitation program individualized to a patient with chronic obstructive lung disease.
  3. Describe exercise prescription for a person with chronic obstructive lung disease.
  4. Summarize a treatment plan for a person with chronic obstructive lung disease.

#3 - Interstitial Lung Diseases


Topics:
  1. Pathophysiology of interstitial lung disease, including sarcoidosis, interstitial pneumonias and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
  2. Education appropriate for individuals with interstitial lung disease.
  3. Exercise prescription specific for individuals with interstitial lung disease.
  4. Case examples of exercise prescription for individuals with interstitial lung disease.

  2. Identify the educational components of a pulmonary rehabilitation program individualized to a patient with obesity-related lung disease.

#5 - Thoracic Surgeries


Topics:
  1. Discussion of surgical procedures, including wedge resection, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, lung transplant, and placement of bronchial stents and valves.
  2. Education appropriate for a person following any of the above surgical procedures.
  3. Exercise prescription specific for a post-thoracic surgery patient.
  4. Case examples of exercise prescription for a post-thoracic surgery patient.

Behavioral/Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe surgical procedures of the thorax.
  2. Identify the educational components of a pulmonary rehabilitation program individualized to a thoracic surgery patient.
  3. Describe exercise prescription specific to a post-thoracic surgery patient.
  4. Summarize a treatment plan for a post-thoracic surgery patient.

#6 - CMS Rules for 2010 and Case Studies


Topics:
  1. Discuss case examples of patients with obstructive lung disease, interstitial lung disease, obesity-related lung disease, and post-thoracic surgery.
  2. Review treatment plans for the diverse populations presented in the case examples.
  3. The new CMS Rules for Pulmonary Rehab reimbursement for 2010.

Behavioral/Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the new CMS Rules for Pulmonary Rehab reimbursement for 2010.
  2. Describe case examples of patients with obstructive lung disease, interstitial lung disease, obesity-related lung disease, and post-thoracic surgery.
  3. Explain treatment plans for the diverse populations presented in the case examples.

Accreditation Information

Nurses – Academy Medical Systems is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 9.0 contact hours will be rewarded to nursing professionals at the completion of this workshop.

Certified Athletic Trainers – Academy Medical Systems is recognized by the Board of Certification (BOC) to offer continuing education for certified athletic trainers. 9 hours will be awarded at the completion of this program.
