Course Description:
This seminar will provide the participant with the necessary information to establish an evidence-based pulmonary rehabilitation program. Whether you are new to pulmonary rehabilitation, or a veteran preparing your program for certification, this seminar will meet your needs. From beginning to end, it will provide the minimum standards required to obtain pulmonary rehabilitation program certification.

#1 - Overview of Pulmonary Rehabilitation


Topics:
  1. Current American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society definition of pulmonary rehabilitation.
  2. Required and recommended resources that should be available in a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
  3. Essential components of a comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program.
  4. Staffing a pulmonary rehabilitation program, including minimum staff requirements, staff to patient ratios, staff competency requirements.
  5. Pulmonary rehabilitation facilities, including required equipment and supplies.
  6. Pulmonary rehabilitation policy and procedure requirements.
  7. Medical emergencies in pulmonary rehabilitation.
  8. The physician’s role in a pulmonary rehabilitation program.

  1. List the resources that should be available in a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
  2. Identify the essential components of a pulmonary rehabilitation program.

#2 - Patient Selection and Assessment


Topics:
  1. American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation’s and American Thoracic Society’s recommendations for diagnoses and symptoms to be considered for patient selection for pulmonary rehab.
  2. Other considerations for selecting patients for pulmonary rehab, including pulmonary function testing and interpretation.
  3. Multidisciplinary patient assessment process, including health history, physical assessment with physical therapy evaluation, exercise assessment, nutritional assessment, and psychosocial assessment.
  4. Determine whether or not a patient is appropriate for participation in pulmonary rehab.
  5. Multidisciplinary treatment plan development based on assessment findings.
Behavioral/Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify patients who should be considered for pulmonary rehab.
  2. Describe the patient assessment process.
  3. Discuss how to determine a treatment plan based on the assessment findings.
  4. Identify the minimum standards necessary to attain program certification.

#3 - Education and Skills Training, and Psychosocial Support


Topics:
  1. The individualized plan of care, including education, exercise, psychosocial, and nutrition components.
  2. Education topics and schedule for a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
  3. Psychosocial assessment: use of standardized tools versus structured interview.
  4. Psychosocial interventions.
Behavioral/Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss the focus and scope of educational and skills training.
  2. Discuss the focus and scope of psychosocial support.
  3. Identify the minimum standards necessary to attain program certification.

#4 - Exercise Prescription in the Pulmonary Population


Topics:
  1. Principles of exercise prescription/training in the context of pulmonary rehab.
  2. Appropriate modes to consider for exercise training in the pulmonary patient population.
  3. Graded Exercise Testing and exercise prescription.
  4. The Six-Minute Walk Test and exercise prescription.
  5. Special considerations, including policy for acceptable SpO2 and titration of oxygen during exercise.
  6. Progression/maintenance/long term compliance.
Behavioral/Learning Objectives:
  1. Explain principles of exercise prescription/training in the context of pulmonary rehab.
  2. Discuss appropriate modes of exercise training in the pulmonary patient population.
  3. Discuss the importance of using exercise related patient assessment information to aide in developing an appropriate individualized exercise prescription.
  4. Discuss examples of exercise prescriptions.
  5. Identify the minimum standards necessary to attain program certification.

#5 - Documentation Requirements and Outcome Assessment


Topics:
  1. Documentation requirements for physician referral to pulmonary rehab, informed consent to participate in pulmonary rehab, physician-approved exercise prescription, and plan of care.
  2. Documentation requirements for medical emergencies and untoward events.
  3. Outcomes assessment for the following domains: clinical, behavioral, health and service.
  4. Utilization of outcomes data to make program improvements.
  5. Required outcomes report format for program certification.
  6. Physician feedback requirements for program certification.
Behavioral/Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the documentation necessary to communicate patient assessment and treatment, the level of care provided, and progress toward goal achievement.
  2. Identify the domains of outcome assessment that should be used to objectively measure the changes following pulmonary rehab participation.
  3. Identify the minimum standards necessary to attain program certification.

#6 - Reimbursement for Pulmonary Rehab and Analysis of Case Examples


Topics:
  1. Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) and Jurisdictions.
  2. Billing codes appropriate for charging for pulmonary rehabilitation services.
  3. Review patient case examples and determine if patients are appropriate candidates for participation in pulmonary rehabilitation, develop a plan of care, identify appropriate billing codes, and discuss outcome tools to measure change.
Behavioral/Learning Objectives:
  1. List the billing codes used in pulmonary rehab, and reimbursement issues impacting pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
  2. Analyze patient case examples in pulmonary rehabilitation.

Respiratory Therapists - This course meets the requirements for continuing education for Respiratory Care Professionals in AL, CA, CT, DE, FL, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, LA, ME, MA, MN, MS, MT, NE, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, RI, SC, TN, TX, WA, WV, WY.

Because each state’s continuing education requirements for respiratory therapists is subject to change, please verify this information with your state board. Thank you.

Nurses – Academy Medical Systems is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 9.0 contact hours will be rewarded to nursing professionals at the completion of this workshop.

Exercise Physiologist – ACSM recognizes AMS’s approved provider status with the ANCC and will honor our continuing education for Certified Exercise Physiologist recertification purposes.

Certified Athletic Trainers – Academy Medical Systems is recognized by the Board of Certification (BOC) to offer continuing education for certified athletic trainers. 9 hours will be awarded at the completion of this program.
